During the summer of 1992 I was one of seventeen artists, from around the world, selected to participate in an international workshop for the ceramic arts located in Tokoname, Japan. Each participant lived with a host family experiencing making artwork as a professional artist going beyond just being a tourist.
As a selected participant we were given the opportunity to use Japanese clays, glazes and the use of various tools such as wood kilns and traditional style raku kilns.
During this residency I created various bottle forms thrown and altered on the potters wheel using a variety of traditional Japanese clays. In addition, I created a series of bamboo & clay brushes influenced from the master calligrapher brushes I was seeing in various studios. As a gift to my fellow participants, and Japanese arts community, I presented a three-day hands on brush making workshop.
My ceramic experiences, learning about and living in the Japanese culture, have allowed me to appreciate the tremendous beauty of nature's imperfectness. As a mix media artist I utilize the proper materials to best fit the ideas in a particular moment of time. I'm drawn to the Asian culture and its universal appreciation to details and craftsmanship.
